Sustainability Policy
Plantations International is a guardian of large plantation tracts, operating to rigid forestry stewardship standards and strict environmental and social criteria to protect the environment and sustain the surrounding community.
Our Approach
Plantations International is a guardian of large plantation tracts. It operates to rigid forestry stewardship standards and to strict environmental and social criteria, with the aim of protecting the environment and sustaining both its business and the surrounding community.
Best agricultural practices offer opportunities to maximise economic output while minimising environmental footprint. The company commits to managing its land so that illegal logging, forest fires and poor farming practices are kept in check, and aims to increase environmental productivity across land used for agriculture and conservation and in resource management.
It aims to maintain the highest level of conservation and environmental protection: safeguarding natural and indigenous forest, protecting flora and fauna, and promoting biodiversity.
Sustainable forest management contributes to the country, its people and the future, and maximises carbon sequestration to help combat global warming.
The company defines sustainable production as the ongoing ability to grow crops or trees without physically degrading the environment or using harmful inputs. Improving yield with fewer resources is key. Plantations International is developing yield-enhancing and post-harvest technologies for the best available germplasm, aiming to reduce the footprint of plantations and farms and to relieve pressure on natural forests and habitats. Its goal is crops with yield, processability and protection built in, requiring less intervention.
Biodiversity
Plantations International is primarily a commercial agroforestry operator, but it strongly supports the conservation and regeneration of indigenous flora, fauna and habitats.
It aims to plant environmentally sensitive areas, such as river edges and wildlife corridors, with indigenous tree species and to encourage the natural regeneration of those habitats.
Environmental Sustainability
The company's projects follow ecological and environmental principles and work closely with national environmental regulatory bodies.
Because its business depends directly on the productivity of land, Plantations International commits to using land wisely and maintaining it for future generations.
Sustainability Initiatives
The company commits to conserving natural resources through eco-efficient management, performance metrics and continuous improvement in five areas:
- Energy and water use
- Waste generation and recycling
- Sustainable packaging
- Sustainable agriculture
- Supply chain optimisation
Climate Change
Plantations International acknowledges climate change as a serious issue. It has set performance targets and commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its direct and indirect operations.
Our Commitments
- Operate in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and engage industry and public stakeholders on responsible standards and voluntary initiatives.
- Strive for an injury-free workplace through a strong health and safety program and high employee engagement.
- Train employees to act safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Expect suppliers to follow applicable environmental laws in their countries, regions and cities, and encourage them to exceed baseline requirements.
Responsibility and Governance
All employees must observe and advance the Environmental Sustainability Policy.
The Sustainability Leadership Team has overall responsibility for environmental performance. It and the Vice President, Public Affairs and Corporate Responsibility, regularly report to, and receive direction from, the CEO and Board of Directors.
Reporting
The company will publicly report on its sustainability performance, and will share performance and management practices with stakeholders to promote transparency and best known methods.
Sustainability Benchmarks
Timber consumers have become more aware of the environmental and economic harm caused by illegal logging and unsustainable forestry, and voluntary initiatives to source legal, sustainable timber are now established.
